Operation Interdependence was founded in December 2001 by Albert Renteria, President of the Tri-
City Council Navy League of the United States.  He chose the name because we depend on our military
and they depend on us. O.I. is starting out with Marines and hopes to spread to all of the services.

The Plan is simple: To provide each platoon or fighting unit that is deployed, on box of treats and a
note of encouragement from home during each month of their deployment.

Platoons vary in size from 20 to 70 men depending upon their duties, and are deployed for
approximately 6 months.  The boxes are not mailed until after the fighting unit is deployed.

In just the first two weeks of January, 2002, two shipments of individual “care packages” were shipped,
reaching a total of 590 Marines and Sailors.  So far more that 100 boxes of “special treats from home”
have been shipped overseas to our serviceman.

In January this year, Richard Cloonan, DDS, of Vista, shipped out over 60 individual packets of
personal items.  “Being a combat veteran, I know the value of a personal package form the states on an
individual’s well-being, and I’m just glad we’re able to help out in this worth effort,” stated Dr. Cloonan.
“This new program is an excellent opportunity to show our men and women in uniform that we’re
thinking of them, that we care about them, and in a demonstrative fashion, we appreciate the sacrifices
they are making on our behalf in the war of terrorism, he went on to say.  In his packages, Dr. Cloonan
includes items such as a letter from a grade school student, toothbrushes, dental floss, tooth cleaning
solution, granola bar, nuts, prepackaged snacks, pens, pencils, and writing tablets.”  He says, “Just be
creative”.

Many clubs, youth groups, companies, corporations and individual neighborhoods are banning
together in this effort.  Groups can easily accomplish this is each volunteer, one a month, donates $1
along with their baggy of treats and note, to a self-appointed coordinator. The money is used to pay for
the shipping.

If you feel your group is too small to sponsor a whole unit, Operation Interdependence can help you
network others.  Once organized, Mr. Renteria will assign a platoon to your group and direct the box
pickup, inspection, and shipping.

If you would like to participate in the program, donate items for shipment, or if you just would like more
information in general, please contact CW04 Albert R. Renteria, USMC (Ret)

I am writing to thank you for your support
of Operation Interdependence.

Dr. Cloonan, your gift recognizing the
outstanding Enlisted rewards our
Servicemen and woman for their
meritorious dedication and establishes an
important community partnership. In the
current wake of terrorism partnerships
like Operation Interdependence
demonstrates not only that America is
united, but that we as a community
support our service members and are
committed to freedom.

Once again, thank you for your support
of Operation Interdependence.  Your gift
means more than recognition of an
outstanding individual; it also embodies
the American spirit.
I am Gunnery Sergeant T, forward
deployed with the 11th Marine
Expeditionary Unit. We just got out of the
desert about three days ago and are now
back aboard the ships of our Amphibious
Ready Group.  I must tell you thanks for
all the support you have given to us over
the past months.  When we opened the
first package the Marines were happy and
excited to get stuff sent from the US but as
we went through the bags we soon
realized we were getting the stuff that we
would need for our Op’s coming up in the
big sand box.  I cannot tell you where
when the second box caught up with us
but it sure was a welcome sight.  We went
through it like kids at Christmas.  It was
more than enough for us so we shared
our good fortune with a few other Devils.
Thanks a lot Dr. Cloonan and Semper Fi.
Letter of Thanks

I would just like to extend my sincere gratitude to you for the wonderful support that you have shown to
the Marines of HMM-166.  Our journey thus far has been very limited in regard to liberty ports, and
receiving such a welcomed gift from you and your associates has given us yet another reminder of why
we are here.  Your effort have been greatly appreciated, and have significantly enhanced the morals of
the Marines of HMM-166.
Thank you for all your support!
A Letter of Appreciation
